[explosion] >> the counter terror raid caught on camera and this has never beforehand in any major american sport. an active player coming out saying he is gay. tonight, why this pro-basketball player says now is the time to tell his story. >> shepard: we begin with a fox urgent. investigators say they have found a woman's d.n.a. on pieces of the boston marathon bombs. that's what a source is telling fox news as fox reports live tonight. experts say that does not necessarily mean a woman helped build the devices. but our source says investigators are looking at what kind of help the suspects may have had h. also tonight, the fbi is confirming it just went into the home where the american widow of the older brother is now staying. catherine russell has not spoken publicly since the attacks to our knowledge. last week her lawyer said

she is doing everything she can to help with the investigation. they also said it an absolute shock when she heard her husband and his brother were the accused bombers. rick leventhal on breaking news duty live tonight in boston. what more do we know about this d.n.a.? >> shepard, we're told that female d.n.a. was found on bomb components. sources say no conclusions can be drawn. the investigation is is far from over. as you mentioned, sources, federal law enforcement sources also telling us that a woman could have unwittingly handled pieces of the bomb before it was assembled and had nothing to do with the marathon attack. according to the "wall street journal," this female d.n.a. prompted agents today to visit the home where tamerlan's widow is living with her parents, seeking d.n.a. samples from catherine russell who converted to islam after meeting tamerlan in 2009 and is the mother of his 3-year-old daughter. agents spent 90 minutes in the home. they left carrying items with what looked like a computer and a ziploc bag filled with personal items. they drove off in a caravan with russell and her

attorney. she has since returned home. and also tonight, shepard, we can tell you the confirmed -- i'm sorry the cause of death for camper alan but isn't revealing that until someone claims his body. that would be next of kin and that would be russell, shep? >> shepard: rick, the family of these two suspects has been talking about a man named mesha who may have influenced their son or sons. now i guess the family of we believe this person is speaking outs. >> right the man known as marine messha. the man says this isn't true. a reporter for the new york review of books actually tracked down him rhode island apartment shared with elderly parents. there an army of reporters is now camped outside their doors. misha whose real name is michael told he wasn't tamerlan's teacher had nothing to do with the bombings and hadn't spoken

to the suspected bombner three years. the family now has an attorney who says that they are cooperating and are very stressed over this entire ordeal, shepard? >> shepard: rick leventhal live in boston tonight. thanks of the fbi also reportedly interviewed an ex-girlfriend of the dead boston bomber tamerlan tsarnaev and she is now speaking out. according to the sun newspaper, which is owned by our parent company, she says the dead bombing suspect tried to brain wash her into becoming, quote: a muslim fanatic who hated america. she also says he beat her when she wore western clothing like jeans. that the sun is reporting the relationship apparently hit the rocks when tsarnaev started seeing his future wife catherine russell after meeting her at a nightclub. russian forces bombing a building with a militant in them in the same region that investigators have linked to the bombing suspects in boston.

explosion. >> shepard: this happened in dagestan. two accused militants reported dead there relatives have said the older bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev visited that area last year. there is no word of any definitive link between the bomb suspects and that raid. police are hunting for whoever killed an 8-year-old girl. stand her to death in her own home it happened in a small town of northern california two days ago. lay la fowler's 12-year-old brother told police he came home and found his little sister in a pool of blood. he saw intruder in the house. investigators have been going door to door hunting for the killer. one report asked whether police consider the brother a suspect. >> he is not a suspect at this time but we are continuing to talk to him which would be normal because he was the last person with the child. >> shepard: investigators say they have collected fingerprints and what may be d.n.a. from the crime scene and they are now analyzing it all. this happened in the community of valley springs

east of san francisco. claudia cowan in our san francisco newsroom for us this afternoon. claudia, i understand you have new information from the coroner's office. >> that's right, shepard. and we now have confirmation that lay la bled to death after being stabbed repeatedly inside her home. no evidence, however, she had been sexually assaulted. the coroner's official cause of death, shock and hemorrhaging from multiple stab wounds. friends and family are remembering 8-year-old lay la as vivacious little girl with a smile that could melt hearts. tomorrow night candlelight vigil at elementary school where lay la was a 3rd grader and where police presence was certainly beefed up today. more than 100 officers are still combing the area for a man who has been vague gli described as white or hispanic with gray hair and last seen wearing dark clothing. no specifics about his ache. investigators say tips are coming in. they hope to have test results on that d.n.a. evidence they found at the home by next week. shepard? >> shepard: claudia cowan in san francisco this

afternoon. just about 2500 people hundred people in that town. it's the kind of space where they don't lock their doors at night or at least it used to be. the white house now says president obama spoke with his russian counterpart vladimir putin today about coordinating their efforts to fight terrorism. the leaders also apparently discussed the concerns about syria and the chemical weapons there. just last week we learned that u.s. intelligence indicates the syrians may have used nerve gas against their people. that's president obama has line.in the past would the white house says right now there is not enough evidence. >> there is much more to be done to verify conclusively that the red line that the president has talked about has been crossed. >> shepard: still, the pentagon does have options in case the president decides it's time to take action. jennifer griffin with the news live at the pentagon tonight. explain the possible plans for using force, jen. >> well, both the white house and the pentagon, shep, appear to be buying time. >> we are continuing to

feud. john roberts live in the courthouse in oxford, harold perrineau with more. john? >> shep, good evening to you. we sat right behind 41-year-old james everett dutschke here in federal court today. he shook his head several times he's reviewed the charges against him. charges that could put him away for life. law enforcement sources tell fox news they have, quote: more solid evidence against dutschke than they did against the first guy that they arrested for this crime. kevin curtis which would be a good thing for them because, when it comes to kevin curtis they had squat. now to hear it told around here, this is last plot against the president that it may be an attempt as you said, shep, to frame kevin curtis, his attorneys in federal court talked about a long running and vicious feud that the two had and that dutschke may have been trying to set him up. i talked to dutschke's attorney george lucas about that late today. he said his client insists that he is innocent and that the level of hatred that kevin curtis has for dutschke is is to lucas the quote craziest thing he has ever seen. a lot of of fingers being

pointed in a lot of different directions here in northern mississippi tonight, shep we have to hear more about what the feds have against dutschke in hearings later this week. >> shepard: ricin suspect several recent run ins with the law. recent case charged with molesting three girls under the age of 13. he denies any involvement there. pleaded not guilty earl this month. he was also found guilty of indecent exposure charges and sentenced to 90 days in jail. a man arrested for stabbing four people in a new mexico church yesterday, said he believed the victims might have been members of a secret society. that's according to court documents. the attack happened at mass, just before the final hymn, witnesses say the guy leapt over a pew and first stabbed the choir leader in the back and three other people who tried to tackle him. he reportedly told investigators that he went after the choir leader because he was, quote: 99% sure the victim was a mason he is then said masons to

a local hydro power station. and that's a wrap on this fox trip around the world in 80 seconds. >> shepard: i'm shepard smith. this is the fox report. it's the bottom of the hour. time for the top of the news. and we're learning more about why russian officials asked to see fbi and cia to investigate this suspect in the boston marathon bombings two years before the attack. fox news has now confirmed the russians wiretapped the older brother and his mother but did not tell the feds at the time. the white house says the president spoke by phone with a russian president vladimir putin today and thanked him for russia's cooperation since the boston bombing. catherine herridge in washington on the top story at the bottom of the hour. what more do we know about this wiretap, catherine? >> well, shep, an intelligence source confirmed to fox news that the evidence in 2011 against the mother and elder son included phone recordings by the russians. one call was between the

mother and suspected extremist, a suspected extremist, rather, there is really a stark contrast between tsarnaev defended her son at multiple news conferences since the marathon bombings and this family photo before they sawted asylum in the u.s. the mother wears western clothing as she holds tamerlan then a toddler on her lap. russian's decision not to share the intelligence about the phone calls reflects long-standing divisions. >> the russians did not give us all the information they h the reason is they still don't trust us. we don't trust them. they felt if they give us more information wield be on to their sources and methods. >> congressman king says the fbi still should have done more and been more aggressive with the russians about that lead, shep. >> shepard: investigators catherine have spoken of other persons of interest. anything specific? >> that's right, on the persons of interest issue congressional source familiar with the investigation tells fox news that there are a handful of individuals that the fbi wants to speak with to determine if the alleged bombers had help leading up to and immediately after the attacks of april 15th.

it the tsarnaev brothers dispotion of evidence including computers. evidence suggests it may have been unwitting, on friday fox news was first to report that the fbi was developing a so-called list of person of interest. this also extends to the bombs as fox reported friday, the detonation mechanism is not founded in the online al qaeda magazine inaspire which is another data point mike rogers the two brothers likely had some kind of outside help, shep. >> shepard: catherine, the younger brother is now in a prison hospital in massachusetts. and one time who did -- i should say and one man who did time there says it's no country club. the feds say they transferred the suspect last week to the federal medical facility devin, which is about 0 miles outside of boston. today in "studio b," a former inmate who spent about a month in that same unit told me what it was like on the inside. >> it is a 10-by-10 room. it's got a steel bunk. he will be alone. he will have very limited human contact. and it will be with guards

only. he have no contact with any other inmate. my guess is even if he had visitors, i don't believe he does, they would not be allowed to see him with the exception of his lawyers and investigators. >> shepard: he says there is no way the place could be an improvement over othe suspect's former hospital room. two weeks after the bombings more survivors are out of the hospital. that's the word from officials in boston. beth israel, mass general and brigham and womens have all report they have released most of the patients they were treating. those are just three of the more than two dozen hospitals that treated victims of the marathon attack. somebody tried to kill syria's prime minister today. the assassination attempt a bombing. it failed. this was the scene this morning after the blast. in what is said to be a very rich and fancy and highly secure neighborhood in syrians capital city of damas dust. a syrian government official says somebody detonated a car bomb at the prime minister and his convoy drove through the area. according to syrians state run immediate prime minister survived the

assassination attempt but the blast reportedly killed several people including civilians, no claim for responsibility just yet for the attack against a member of president assad's regime. the syrian opposition has been demanding the president step down for more than two years now. the chief fox report correspondent jonathan hunt is live with us now. this was a pretty brazen attack. >> certainly was. not least because of the area in which it took place it was an area of damascus that would generally be considered one of the most secure yet the rebels "in there with this bomb and they targeted a leading official of the assad regime. they did not actually get their target but it is a fact that very few assad regime officials will be sleeping any easier in their beds tonight, shep, after this kind of attack. >> shepard: it appears that assad himself is fighting back as hard as ever. >> as hard as he ever can with every weapon that he has at his dispofl. look at this video we just got in today of a recent air strike.

>> [shouting] [explosion] that we are told strike against rebels. we can't confirm the authenticity of that video. chemical weapons remain the concern for many neighboring nations including israel. they are very concerned the israelis, that some of those chemical weapons may find their hands, their way into the hands of hezbollah syria's allies that have their base across the border in lebanon. this is also where president putin of russia could be a pivotal figure. he had that phone call with president obama today, many believe that president putin is perhaps the only world leader who could still persuade assad to step down and russian forces could be critical in then going in and securing those chemical weapons. shep? >> shepard: all right, jonathan. that attack today was in the first in the syrian capital to target officials or supporters of president assad's regime. just last month a man blew

himself up at a mosque in damascus, killing a leading sunni muslim preach his or her had been a strong assad backer. 41 others also died in that blast. and back in december, a car bomb wounded syrians interior minister, reportedly killed several other people. and last summer, an explosion rocked the sir i can't believe national security building during a high profile meeting meeting. that attack killed four top regime officials including assad's brother-in-law and the raining defense minister. american civilian cargo plane today crashed shortly after takeoff from the largest u.s. base in afghanistan and killed all seven people on board that's according to official with the u.s. led coalition forces. the aircraft reportedly went down near bagram air field north of kabul. at this hour there is still no word what caused that crash. there were no reports of enemy combat activity in the area at the time. last week's brutal flight delays barely behind us and today president obama made his pick for the leader who

he selected the mayor of charlotte, north carolina, democrat anthony fox to serve as transportation secretary during the president's second term. mayor fox is the first african-american president obama nominated for new cabinet. this all comes just days after lawmakers reached a deal to end staffing cuts for air traffic controllers linked to the spending sequester in d.c. analysts blame the staffing decrease for painful delays at the airports cost to coast last week. in some cases passengers had to wait at the gate for several extra hours. ed henry is live for us at the white house tonight. tell us about mayor fox of chearlts. >> well, shep, certainly diversity is a factor because the president has faced criticism as you noted for not having enough of that in his cabinet that being an important factor for him. secondly, charlotte, of course, hosted the democratic national convention back in the summer. so that certainly did not hurt his chances but anthony fox also has serious credentials as a mayor who has seen firsthand how crumbling

infrastructure could hurt local economy and the president really highlighted that today. >> since anthony took office they have broken ground on a new street car project that's going to bring modern electric trans-service to the downtown area. expanded the international airport and extending the city's light rail system. all of that has not only helped create new jobs. it's helped charlotte to become more attractive to business. >> another important factor is that it appears there is going it be some strong republican support on capitol hill. bill shutter, who is the house transportation committee chairman said today, quoted: i remain committed to building consensus about how to strengthen our infrastructure promote economic growth and come petteddive in the marketplace. once he has been confirmed by the senate i look forward to working with mayor fox to achieve these goals for our country, saying once is he confirmed suggesting there will be republican support. that's much different than chuck hagel other nominees the president has had who faced
